عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بنِ مسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: قالَ رسُولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «إنَّهَا ستَكُونُ بعْدِي أَثَرَةٌ وأُمُورٌ تُنْكِرُونَهَا» قالوا: يا رسُولَ اللهِ، كَيفَ تَأْمُرُ مَنْ أَدْركَ مِنَّا ذلكَ؟ قَالَ: «تُؤَدُّونَ الحَقَّ الَّذِي عَلَيْكُمْ، وتَسْأَلُونَ اللهَ الَّذِي لَكُمْ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After me there will be favoritism and matters you will find detestable." They said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you command those of us who live to see that? He said: "Render the right that is due from you, and ask Allah for that which is due to you." [Agreed upon]
الشرح · explanation
أثرة: أي استئثار بالخيرات والمناصب والمكاسب من طرف من كان الأمر بيده، أو تفضيله لمن حوله على بقية الناس رغم تساويهم في الاستحقاق.
Favoritism: that is, the monopolizing of goods, positions, and gains by the one in whose hand authority lies, or his preferring those around him over the rest of the people despite their equal entitlement.

يجب على الحكام أن يعدلوا، وأن يوصلوا الحقوق إلى أصحابها. الإشارة إلى أن الغالب في من كان ظالما أنه لا يستجيب لمطالب الناس برد حقوقهم، فكان التوجيه الرفيق الشفيق منه صلى الله عليه وسلم أن يتوجهوا إلى مالك الملك سبحانه أن ييسر لهم حقوقهم أو يرزقهم الصبر ويخلفهم خيرًا وأبقى في دار الخلود.
Rulers are obligated to be just and to deliver rights to those entitled to them. The indication that one who is unjust will, more often than not, not respond to the people's demands to return their rights; so the gentle, compassionate guidance from him (peace and blessings be upon him) is that they turn to the Owner of all sovereignty, Glorified is He, to make their rights easy for them, or to grant them patience and compensate them with something better and more lasting in the Abode of Eternity.
