Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, will you not appoint me to a position?" He struck my shoulder with his hand and then said: "O Abu Dharr, you are weak, and it is a trust, and on the Day of Resurrection it will be a disgrace and a source of regret, except for one who takes it by its right and fulfills what is due from him in it." Reported by Muslim.

"Will you appoint me": will you make me an official, that is, assign me responsibility over some task. "My shoulder": my shoulder. "And it is a disgrace and a source of regret": that is, authority is an ugly scandal for one who does not fulfill its due, making him regret having taken it on. "By its right": that is, he was worthy of it.

Whoever seeks authority is not to be appointed to it; the most deserving of it is one who is competent for it. Authority is a grave trust and a serious responsibility; whoever holds it must tend to it with due care and not betray Allah's covenant regarding it. The merit of one who holds authority and is worthy of it, whether a just leader, a trustworthy custodian, or a diligent worker. It is not enough for gaining this merit that a person be qualified for the authority; rather he must persist in fulfilling its requirements, and whenever he finds himself unable to fulfill its due, it becomes part of his trust to make way for another.
