عنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُما: أَنَّ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم مَرَّ عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ وَهُوَ يَعِظُ أَخَاهُ في الحَيَاءِ، فَقَالَ رسُولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «دَعْهُ فإِنَّ الحياءَ مِنَ الإِيمانِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man of the Ansar who was admonishing his brother about modesty. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him, for modesty is part of faith." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

يعظ في الحياء: يبين له ما يناله من ضرر بسبب ملازمته له، والظاهر أنه كان مفرطًا فيه. الحياء: صفة كريمة تقوم في النفس فتمنعها من فعل ما يستقبح. من الإيمان: جزء من الإيمان ومن صفات المؤمنين.
"Admonishing him about modesty": pointing out to him the harm he incurs from clinging to it; apparently he was excessive in it. "Modesty (haya')": a noble quality residing in the soul that restrains it from doing what is deemed shameful. "Part of faith": a portion of faith and one of the qualities of the believers.

فضل الحياء، وأنه من كمال الإيمان، لأن المستحي ينقطع عن فعل المعاصي، فيحمله حياؤه هذا على فعل الطاعات. الحياء فطرة وغريزة في الإنسان، ولكنه ينمو ويزداد بالتخلُّق والاكتساب والتزام آداب الشريعة.
The merit of modesty, and that it is part of the perfection of faith, because the one who has modesty refrains from committing sins, so his modesty drives him to perform acts of obedience. Modesty is innate and instinctive in the human being, but it grows and increases through cultivation, acquisition, and adherence to the etiquettes of the Shari'ah.
