عَنْ أبي هُريرةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أنَّ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «الإيمَانُ بِضْعٌ وسبْعُونَ، أوْ بِضْعٌ وَسِتُّونَ شُعْبةً، فَأَفْضَلُها قوْلُ لا إلهَ إلَّا اللهُ، وَأدْنَاها إمَاطةُ الأَذَى عنِ الطَّرِيقِ، والْحَياءُ شُعْبَةٌ مِنَ الإيمَانِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Faith has seventy-odd, or sixty-odd, branches. The most excellent of them is saying 'There is no god but Allah,' and the least of them is removing something harmful from the road. And modesty is a branch of faith." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

بِضْع: هُو مِنَ الثَّلاثةِ إلى الْعَشَرَةِ. شُعبة: قِطْعَة وخَصْلَة. فأفضلها: أكثرها ثوابًا وأعلاها مكانةً عند الله تعالى. أدناها: أقلها ثوابًا ودرجةً. إماطَة: إزَالَة. الأَذَى: مَا يُؤذِي، كَحجَرٍ وَشَوْكٍ وَطينٍ وَرَمَادٍ وَقَذَرٍ وَنحوِ ذلكَ.
"Odd number (bid')": it is from three to ten. "Branch": a portion and a trait. "The most excellent of them": the greatest of them in reward and the highest in rank with Allah the Exalted. "The least of them": the smallest of them in reward and degree. "Removing": eliminating. "Harm": whatever causes harm, such as a stone, thorn, mud, ashes, filth, and the like.

أنّ الإيمان درجات ومراتب، وأنّ الحياء درجة من درجاته، وصفة من صفاته، لما له من أثر في النفس والسلوك. ألّا نحتقر شيئًا من الأعمال ولو كان صغيرًا فى أعيننا، فإنّ إماطة الأذى عمل يسير، ولكنه من الإيمان.
That faith has degrees and ranks, and that modesty is one of its degrees and one of its qualities, on account of its effect on the soul and conduct. That we should not belittle any deed, even if it seems small in our eyes, for removing something harmful is a trivial act, yet it is part of faith.
