عَنْ أبي سعيدٍ الخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: كان رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ أَشَدَّ حَيَاءً مِنَ الْعَذْرَاءِ في خِدْرِهَا، فَإذَا رأى شَيْئًا يَكْرَهُهُ عَرَفْنَاهُ في وَجْهِهِ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was more modest than a virgin in her private chamber, and when he saw something he disliked, we would recognize it in his face. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
العذراء: البكر وهي الأنثى التي لم تتزوج بعد. الخدر: ناحية مخفية في البيت يترك عليها ستر. عرفناه من وجهه: أي تغير وجهه ولم يتكلم لشدة حيائه.
"The virgin": the maiden, the female who has not yet married. "The private chamber": a concealed corner of the house over which a curtain is drawn. "We would recognize it in his face": that is, his face would change and he would not speak, out of his intense modesty.

حَقِيقَةُ الحَياءِ خُلُقٌ يبْعثُ على تَرْكِ الْقَبِيحِ، ويمْنَعُ منَ التَّقْصيرِ في حَقِّ ذِي الحَقِّ. الحثّ على التخلّق بالحياء، اقتداءً به صلّى الله عليه وسلّم. الحياء صفة ذاتية للأنثى، لذلك كانت قلة الحياء في النساء دليل قرب الساعة. بيان ما اشتمل عليه النَّبِيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم من الحياء، وهو من الخلق العظيم.
The reality of modesty is a character trait that impels one to leave what is shameful and prevents one from falling short in the right of the one entitled to it. Encouragement to adopt modesty, in emulation of him (peace and blessings be upon him). Modesty is an intrinsic quality of the female; hence the scarcity of modesty among women is a sign of the nearness of the Hour. A depiction of the modesty that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) possessed, which is part of his magnificent character.
