عَنْ عبدِ اللهِ بنِ عمرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُما: أنَّ عمرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ حينَ تَأَيَّمتْ بِنْتُهُ حفْصةُ قالَ: لقيتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ، فَعَرَضْتُ علَيْهِ حفصةَ فَقُلتُ: إنْ شِئتَ أنكَحْتُكَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمرَ؟ فقالَ: سَأَنْظُرُ في أمْرِي، فَلبِثْتُ ليَالِيَ، ثُمَّ لَقِيَني، فقال: قد بدا لي أن لا أَتَزَوَّجَ يوْمي هذا، فَلَقِيتُ أبا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، فقلتُ: إنْ شِئْتَ أَنكَحْتُكَ حَفْصةَ بنْتَ عُمَرَ، فصمتَ أبو بكْرٍ، فَلَمْ يرْجِعْ إليَّ شَيْئًا، فَكُنْتُ عَلَيْهِ أَوجَدَ مِنِّي على عُثْمانَ، فَلَبثْتُ ليَالِيَ، ثُمَّ خطَبهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، فَأَنْكَحْتُهَا إيَّاهُ، فلَقِيَنَي أبُو بكْرٍ فقالَ: لَعَلَّكَ وجَدْتَ علَيَّ حِينَ عَرضْتَ علَيَّ حفْصةَ فَلَمْ أَرْجِعْ إِلَيْك شَيْئًا؟ فقلتُ: نَعمْ، قالَ: فَإِنَّهُ لمْ يَمْنعْني أنْ أرْجِعَ إِلَيْكَ فيما عرضْتَ عليَّ إلَّا أَنِّي كُنْتُ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم ذَكرَها، فَلَمْ أَكُنْ لِأُفْشِيَ سِرَّ رسول الله صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ، ولوْ تَركَهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ لقَبِلْتُهَا. رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), when his daughter Hafsah became widowed, said: I met Uthman ibn Affan and offered Hafsah to him, saying: "If you wish, I will marry Hafsah bint Umar to you." He said: "I will consider my affair." I waited several nights, then he met me and said: "It has occurred to me that I will not marry at this present time." Then I met Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "If you wish, I will marry Hafsah bint Umar to you." Abu Bakr was silent and gave me no reply, and I was more resentful toward him than toward Uthman. I waited several nights, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proposed to her, and I married her to him. Then Abu Bakr met me and said: "Perhaps you were resentful toward me when you offered Hafsah to me and I gave you no reply?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Nothing prevented me from replying to you regarding what you offered me except that I knew the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had mentioned her, and I would not divulge the secret of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Had the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left her, I would have accepted her." Reported by al-Bukhari.

تأيّمت حفصة: أي توفي زوجها خُنيس بن حذافة السهمي، وهو من أصحاب رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلّم، توفي متأثرًا من جراحه التي أصابته في معركة أحد. فلبثت: انتظرت. بدا لي: ظهر لي. يومي هذا: أي خلال هذه الفترة الزمنية الحالية وليس المراد اليوم بعينه. فكنت أوجد: أي أشدّ غضبًا. ذكرها: أي أشار إلى أنّه يريد أن يتزوّج بها. لأفشي: لأنشر وأظهر.
"Hafsah became widowed": that is, her husband Khunays ibn Hudhafah al-Sahmi died. He was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who died from the wounds he suffered at the Battle of Uhud. "I waited": I waited. "It has occurred to me": it became apparent to me. "At this present time": that is, during this current period of time, not a specific day. "I was more resentful": that is, more angry. "He mentioned her": that is, he indicated that he wished to marry her. "To divulge": to spread and disclose.

It is permissible for a person to offer his daughter in marriage to people of goodness and righteousness. The virtue of al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), on account of the Messenger's (peace and blessings be upon him) trust in him. Keeping a secret and going to great lengths to conceal it is a noble and beautiful trait.
