Riyad Al Salihin

Thabit reported from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came upon me while I was playing with the boys. He greeted us with salam and then sent me on an errand, so I was late in returning to my mother. When I came, she said: "What kept you?" I said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me on an errand." She said: "What was his errand?" I said: "It is a secret." She said: "Do not tell anyone the secret of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Anas said: "By Allah, had I told it to anyone, I would have told it to you, O Thabit." Reported by Muslim, and al-Bukhari reported part of it in abridged form.

The virtue of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), his great gentleness, the sincerity of his trustworthiness and fidelity, and his keeping the secret of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) both during his life and after his death. The excellent upbringing that Anas's mother gave her son, for she enjoined him not to speak of the secret of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Keeping the secret of one's brothers and not divulging it is among noble character and Islamic etiquette.
