عَنْ أبي هُريرةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أنَّ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «آيَةُ المُنَافِقِ ثَلاثٌ: إذا حَدَّث كَذبَ، وإذا وَعدَ أخلَفَ، وإذا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ. زاد في روايةٍ لِمُسْلِمٍ: «وإنْ صَامَ وصَلَّى وَزَعَمَ أَنَّهُ مسلِمٌ».
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The signs of the hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is entrusted, he betrays." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). In a narration of Muslim he added: "Even if he fasts, prays, and claims that he is a Muslim."
الشرح · explanation
آية المنافق: أي علامة المنافق. المنافق: الّذي يخالف ظاهرُه باطنَه. أخلف: لم يفِ بوعده.
"The signs of the hypocrite": that is, the marks of the hypocrite. "The hypocrite": the one whose outward differs from his inward. "He breaks his promise": he does not fulfill his promise.

شمول الإسلام لجوانب التعامل الصادق مع الناس في الحديث والوعد والأمانة. تحذير النّبيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم المسلمين من مرض النفاق وبيان علاماته لِبيان شدّة خطره. من اجتمعت فيه هذه الصفات دل ذلك على تأصُّل الشر فيه حتى وُصِف بالنفاق ونُفي عنه الإسلام، وهذا وعيد شديد. أن اجتماع هذه الصفات قد يكون سببًا يقود صاحبه للخروج من الإسلام. ضرورة محاسبة الإنسان نفسه لسلامة إيمانه. بيان أن هذه الصفات أكثر ما تظهر من المنافقين نفاقًا أكبر.
Islam's comprehensiveness in encompassing honest dealings with people in speech, promises, and trusts. The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) warning to the Muslims against the disease of hypocrisy and his clarification of its signs, to make plain the severity of its danger. Whoever combines these traits, it indicates that evil is deeply rooted in him, to the point that he is described as a hypocrite and Islam is negated of him; this is a severe threat. That the combination of these traits may be a cause that leads its possessor out of Islam. The necessity of a person calling himself to account for the soundness of his faith. A clarification that these traits appear most in the hypocrites who practice major hypocrisy.
