عَنْ عبدِ اللهِ بنِ عمرِو بنِ العاصِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُما: أنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «أرْبع مَنْ كُنَّ فِيهِ كَانَ مُنَافِقًا خَالِصًا، ومنْ كَانَتْ فِيهِ خَصلَةٌ مِنْهُنَّ كانَتْ فِيهِ خَصْلَةٌ مِنَ النِّفاقِ حَتَّى يَدَعَهَا: إذا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ، وإذَا حدَّثَ كذَبَ، وَإذا عَاهَدَ غَدَرَ، وَإذا خَاصَمَ فَجَرَ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are four traits: whoever has all of them is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of them has a trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when he is entrusted, he betrays; when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a covenant, he acts treacherously; and when he disputes, he behaves wickedly." المنافق: هو من يضمر الكفر ويتظاهر بالإسلام، وهو سيء الباطن حسن الظاهر. الخصلة: الصفة المتأصّلة. غدر: نقض ما اتفق عليه وفعل خلافه. فجر: بالغ في الخصومة، وفي الميل عن الحق.
"The hypocrite": he is one who conceals disbelief and outwardly displays Islam, corrupt in his inward, fair in his outward. "Trait (khaslah)": a deeply rooted quality. "Acts treacherously": he breaks what was agreed upon and does its opposite. "Behaves wickedly": he goes to excess in the dispute and in deviating from the truth.
