عنْ أبي وائِلٍ شَقِيقِ بنِ سَلَمَةَ قالَ: كَانَ ابْنُ مسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يُذكِّرُنَا في كُل خَمِيسٍ، فَقَالَ لهُ رَجُلٌ: يَا أَبَا عبْدِ الرَّحْمنِ، لوَدِدْتُ أَنَّكَ ذَكَّرْتَنَا كُلَّ يَوْمٍ، فقالَ: أمَا إِنَّهُ يَمنَعُني مِنْ ذَلكَ أنِّي أكْرَهُ أنْ أُمِلَّكُمْ وإِنِّي أتخَوَّلُكُمْ بِالموْعِظةِ كَمـَا كَانَ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يَتَخَوَّلُنَا بِهَا مَخافَةَ السَّآمَةِ علَيْنَا. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Wa'il Shaqiq ibn Salamah reported: Ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give us a reminder every Thursday. A man said to him: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, I wish that you would remind us every day." He replied: "What prevents me from doing so is that I dislike wearying you. I take care in exhorting you from time to time, just as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to take care in exhorting us, fearing to make us weary." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

يذكرنا: أي يعقد لنا مجلسا في الوعظ وبيان أحكام الدين. لوددت: لأحببت وتمنّيت. يَتَخَوَّلُنَا: يَتَعهَّدُنا.
"Gave us a reminder": that is, he would hold a session for us in exhortation and explaining the rulings of the religion. "I wish (la-wadidtu)": I would love and long for. "Took care in exhorting us (yatakhawwaluna)": he would attend to us, choosing suitable times.

Moderation in exhortation and guidance, because it is human nature to grow weary of what is done constantly, even if it is loved. It is recommended to make use of times of energy and receptiveness for teaching and exhortation.
