عَنْ عائشةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْها قالتْ: مَا رَأَيْتُ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ مُسْتَجْمِعًا قَطُّ ضَاحِكًا حتَّى تُرى مِنْهُ لَهَوَاتُهُ، إِنَّما كانَ يَتَبَسَّمُ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughing so heartily that the uvula at the back of his mouth could be seen; he would only smile. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
مستجمعًا: مبالغًا في الضحك. لهَوَاتُه: هِيَ اللَّحُمةُ الَّتِي في أقْصَى سَقْفِ الْفَمِ.
"Heartily (mustajmian)": laughing to excess. "His uvula (lahawat)": the piece of flesh at the far end of the roof of the mouth.

استحباب الإقلال من الضحك، لأن كثرة الضحك من مظاهر الغفلة عن الله، وربما أدى إلى ذهاب هيبة الرجل ووقاره بين إخوانه. التبسُّم يحصل به المقصود من إظهار البِشر والترحاب وسماحة النفس فعلى المسلم أن يقتدي برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في ذلك ولا يكون غالب حاله القهقهة وكثرة الضحك بل يكتفي بالتبسم ما أمكن.
It is recommended to laugh little, for much laughter is among the signs of heedlessness of Allah and may lead to the loss of a person's dignity and gravity among his brethren. A smile achieves the intended purpose of showing cheerfulness, welcome, and a gracious spirit; so a Muslim should follow the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in this and not let his general state be loud laughter and frequent laughing, but rather content himself with smiling as much as possible.
