Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When the prayer is called (the iqamah is made), do not come to it running; come to it walking, with tranquility upon you. Whatever you catch, pray, and whatever you miss, complete." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). Muslim added in a narration of his: "For when one of you is heading to the prayer, he is [already] in prayer."

The dislike of hurrying to catch the prayer with the imam, because it disturbs the worshippers through the commotion and disturbs the one hurrying through his labored breathing caused by the rush and his lack of composure as he enters the prayer. It is recommended to come to the prayer with humble reverence and dignity. The merit of congregational prayer is attained by catching a portion of the prayer, but whoever catches it from its beginning has a more complete rank. When a person sets out for the prayer, its reward is written for him from the moment he begins walking to it. What a person prays with the imam is the beginning of his prayer, and what he performs after that is its end, because completing applies only to the last part of a thing.
