عَنْ أبي سُليْمَانَ مَالكِ بنِ الحُويْرثِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: أَتَيْنَا رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم وَنحْنُ شَبَبةٌ متَقَاربُونَ، فَأَقمْنَا عِنْدَهُ عشْرينَ لَيْلَةً، وكانَ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ رَحِيمًا رفِيقًا، فَظَنَّ أَنَّا قَدِ اشْتَقْنَا أَهْلَنَا، فسَأَلَنَا عَمَّنْ تَرَكْنَا مِنْ أَهْلِنَا، فَأَخْبَرْنَاهُ، فقالَ: «ارْجعُوا إِلى أَهْليكُم، فَأَقِيمُوا فِيهِمْ، وَعلِّمُوهُم وَمُرُوهُمْ، وَصَلُّوا صَلاةَ كَذا في حِين كَذَا، وَصَلاَةَ كَذَا في حِينِ كَذَا، فَإِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلاةُ فَلْيُؤذِّنْ لَكُمْ أَحَدُكُمْ، وَلْيؤُمَّكُمْ أَكبَرُكُمْ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ. زادَ الْبُخَارِيُّ في روايةٍ لهُ: «وَصَلَّوا كمَا رَأَيتُمُوني أُصَلِّي».
Abu Sulayman Malik ibn al-Huwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), being young men of similar age, and we stayed with him for twenty nights. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was merciful and gentle. When he thought that we had grown homesick for our families, he asked us about those we had left behind, and we informed him. He said: "Return to your families and stay among them, and teach them and command them [to do good]. Pray such-and-such a prayer at such-and-such a time, and such-and-such a prayer at such-and-such a time. When the time for prayer comes, let one of you make the call to prayer, and let the eldest of you lead you." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). Al-Bukhari added in a narration of his: "And pray as you have seen me pray."

"Young men (shababah)": the plural of shabb (youth). "Gentle (rafiqan)": compassionate and forbearing.

فضل الرحلة في طلب العلم النافع إن لم يتهيأ للإنسان في بلده. بيان شفقة النَّبِيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم على أصحابه. وجوب تعليم الناس وتثقيفهم في الدين. لما تساوى هؤلاء الشباب في مقدار ما أخذوه من العلم عن النّبيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم كان المقدّم فيهم بالإمامة الأكبر سنا، وإلّا فإن الأعلم يُقدَّم. حرص الإسلام على إقامة الصلاة جماعة مع الأذان لها في أي مجتمع أو مجموعة من الناس كمدرسة أو مصنع أو رحلة أو غير ذلك.
The merit of traveling in pursuit of beneficial knowledge if it is not available to a person in his own land. A demonstration of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) compassion for his Companions. The obligation to teach people and instruct them in the religion. Since these young men were equal in the amount of knowledge they had taken from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the one given precedence in leading the prayer was the eldest; otherwise, the most knowledgeable is given precedence. Islam's keenness on establishing prayer in congregation, with the call to prayer, in any community or group of people, such as a school, a factory, a journey, or the like.
