عَنْ عُمَرَ بنِ الخطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: اسْتَأْذَنْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ في الْعُمْرَةِ، فَأَذِنَ وقالَ: «لا تنْسنَا يَا أُخيَّ مِنْ دُعَائِكَ» فقالَ كَلِمَةً ما يَسُرُّني أَنَّ لي بهَا الدُّنْيَا. وفي روايةٍ قالَ: «أَشْرِكْنَا يَا أُخَيَّ في دُعَائِكَ» رَوَاهُ أّبُو دَاوُودَ، وَالتِّرْمِذِيُّ وقالَ: حديثٌ حسنٌ صحيحٌ.
Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to perform Umrah. He granted it and said: "Do not forget us, dear brother, in your supplication." He spoke a word that I would not exchange for the whole world. In another narration he said: "Include us, dear brother, in your supplication." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.
الشرح · explanation
أشركنا في دعائك: أي اجعلنا معك في دعائك. أنّ لي بها الدّنيا: أي كون جميع الدّنيا لي بدلًا منها.
"Include us in your supplication": that is, make us present with you in your supplication. "I would not exchange for the whole world": that is, that the entire world should be mine in its place.

It is recommended for the one staying behind to ask the traveler and enjoin upon him supplication in places of goodness, even if the one staying is more virtuous than the traveler, especially when the journey is for Hajj or Umrah. The virtue of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). The humility of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The merit of supplicating for someone in his absence. It is recommended for a student to seek permission from his teacher, and a disciple from his shaykh, in his important affairs.
