عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُما: أَنَّ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ كانَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ طَرِيقِ الشَّجَرَةِ، وَيَدْخلُ مِنْ طَريقِ المُعَرَّسِ، وإِذَا دَخَلَ مَكَّةَ دَخَلَ مِنَ الثَّنِيَّةِ العُليَا، وَيَخْرُجُ مِنَ الثَّنِيَّةِ السُّفْلى. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ .
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would set out by the route of al-Shajarah and enter by the route of al-Muarras, and when he entered Mecca he would enter through the upper mountain pass and leave through the lower mountain pass. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

من طريق الشجرة : هو طريق من أراد الذهاب إلى مكة من المدينة، كان النَّبِيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم يخرج منه إلى ذي الحليفة. المُعرَّس: هو مسجد ذي الحليفة وهو ميقات أهل المدينة، وسمي بالمعرّس لنزول المسافر ليلًا فيه للنوم والاستراحة. الثنية العليا، هي والثنية السفلى موضعان في مكة. الثنية: الطريق الضيّق بين الجبلين.
"By the route of al-Shajarah": it is the route of one who intends to go to Mecca from Medina; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would set out on it toward Dhu al-Hulayfah. Al-Muarras: it is the mosque of Dhu al-Hulayfah, the miqat of the people of Medina, so named because the traveler would stop there at night to sleep and rest. The upper mountain pass: it and the lower mountain pass are two places in Mecca. The mountain pass (thaniyyah): the narrow path between two mountains.

استحباب الذهاب من طريق والعودة من آخر عند الذهاب للحج أو غيره. حرص الصحابة على تفاصيل تحركاته صلّى الله عليه وسلّم من شدّة حبّهم له واعتنائهم بنقل سنّته وأخباره. ليست هناك أفضليّة في دخول مكّة أو دخول المسجد الحرام لمدخل معين أو باب محدد بل يدخل من حيث تيسِّر له.
It is recommended to go by one route and return by another when setting out for Hajj or otherwise. The keenness of the Companions regarding the details of his movements (peace and blessings be upon him), out of the intensity of their love for him and their care in transmitting his Sunnah and reports. There is no preference in entering Mecca or entering the Sacred Mosque through a particular entrance or specific gate; rather one enters from wherever is convenient for him.
