عنْ عُمَرَ بنِ أبي سلَمَة رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قال: قال لي رسولُ الله صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «سَمِّ الله، وكُلْ بِيمِينكَ، وكُلْ مِمَّا يَلِيكَ». مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Umar ibn Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
سمّ الله: أي اذكر اسم الله، أو قل بسم الله. كل مما يليك: أي من الجانب الذي أمامك من الصحن.
"Mention the name of Allah": that is, invoke the name of Allah, or say "Bismillah." "Eat from what is nearest to you": that is, from the side of the dish that is in front of you.

الأمر بالتسمية عند الأكل، يأثم الإنسان بتعمُّد تركها، ويقاس عليه الشرب. تحصل التسمية بقول: بسم الله. الحكمة من التسمية أنّها تجلب البركة وتدعو إلى القناعة وعدم الشره، وتمنع مشاركة الشيطان الإنسان في أكله وشربه. الأكل مما يلي الآكل سنة متفق عليها، وهذا خاص فيما إذا كان الطعام صنفا واحدا، فإذا كان متنوعا فله أن يأكل من الأنواع الأخرى ولو كانت بعيدة عنه. وجوب تربية الأولاد على الآداب الإسلامية والأخلاق الفاضلة، وتوجيههم وتنبيههم إلى ما يبدر منهم من أخطاء ومخالفات.
The command to mention the name of Allah when eating; a person sins by deliberately omitting it, and drinking is measured by analogy to it. The mentioning of the name is fulfilled by saying: Bismillah. The wisdom behind mentioning the name is that it brings blessing, calls to contentment and away from greed, and prevents the devil from sharing in a person's food and drink. Eating from what is nearest to the eater is a Sunnah agreed upon, and this applies specifically when the food is a single kind; but if it is varied, he may eat from the other kinds even if they are far from him. The obligation of raising children upon Islamic etiquette and noble character, and directing them and alerting them to the mistakes and violations that issue from them.
