Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked his family for something to eat with bread, and they said: We have nothing but vinegar. So he called for it and began to eat, saying: "What an excellent condiment vinegar is! What an excellent condiment vinegar is!" Reported by Muslim.
"Condiment" (udm): the plural of idam, which is what is eaten together with bread and the like, such as broth and cooked dishes eaten with bread. "So he called for it": he ordered that it be brought.

It is recommended to praise food even if it is simple and inexpensive. Praise of moderation in eating, and of a person eating whatever is readily available without affectation or displeasure. The humility of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his food. Praising the food consoles the one who cooked it and devoted her time and effort to it, which has the deepest effect in spreading affection and love within households.
