عنْ عمرَ بنِ أبي سَلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قالَ: كُنتُ غلامًا في حِجْرِ رسولِ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، وكَانتْ يَدِي تَطِيشُ في الصَّحْفَةِ، فقال ليَ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «يَا غُلامُ سَمِّ اللهَ تعالى، وَكُلْ بيمينِكَ، وكلْ مِمَّا يَلِيكَ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Umar ibn Abi Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: I was a boy under the care of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and my hand used to roam about in the dish. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O boy, mention the name of Allah the Exalted, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is next to you." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

تَطِيش: تتحرّكُ وتمتدُّ إِلى نواحي الصَّحْفَةِ. الصَّحْفة: إناء يتَّسع لإطعام خمسة أشخاص، وهو أصغر من القصعة التي تتسع لعشرة. وكل مِمَّا يَليك: أي لا تأكل من حافة غيرك.
"Roamed about" (tatish): moved and reached toward the various sides of the dish. "The dish" (sahfah): a vessel large enough to feed five people; it is smaller than the qas'ah, which holds enough for ten. "Eat from what is next to you": that is, do not eat from another's side.

من آداب الطعام أن يبدأه بالتسمية، وأن يأكل بيده اليمنى، وألا يأخذ الطعام من جهة من يأكل معه. أنّ من سوء الأدب الأكل من حافة الغير وهذا تعدٍّ عليهم. حرص النّبيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم على تعليم الصغار أدب الطعام في الإسلام. تواضع النّبيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم وطيب نفسه بأكله مع ربيبه الصغير في صحفة واحدة، مع ما يبدو من الصغير غالبًا مما يُزعج الكبير.
Among the etiquettes of eating are to begin with the mention of Allah's name, to eat with the right hand, and not to take food from the side of the one eating with you. Eating from another's side is bad manners and an encroachment upon them. The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) keenness to teach children the etiquette of eating in Islam. The humility and good-naturedness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in eating with his young stepson from a single dish, despite what a child usually does that might annoy an adult.
