عنْ جَبَلَةَ بنِ سُحَيْمٍ قالَ: أَصابَنا عامُ سَنَةٍ معَ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، فرُزقْنَا تَمْرًا، وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بنُ عُمرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا يمُرُّ بنَا ونحْنُ نأْكُلُ، فيقولُ: لا تُقَارِنُوا، فإِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ نَهى عنِ الإقْرانِ، ثُمَّ يَقولُ: إِلَّا أَنْ يَسْتَأْذِنَ الرَّجُلُ أَخَاهُ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Jabalah ibn Suhaym reported: A year of famine befell us while we were with Ibn al-Zubayr, and we were provided with dates. Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would pass by us as we ate and say: Do not pair (dates), for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade pairing — then he would add: unless a man seeks the permission of his brother. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
عامُ سنة: أي عام فيه قحط وجدب نتيجة عدم نزول الأمطار. لا تقارنوا: أي لا يأكل الرجل تمرتين في لقمة واحدة.
"A year of famine": that is, a year of drought and barrenness resulting from lack of rainfall. "Do not pair": that is, a man should not eat two dates in a single mouthful.

النهي عن القران بين تمرتين إذا أكل مع جماعة، لأنّ ذلك دليل على الطمع، ولأنّه يوغر الصدور، ولذلك أبيح عند إذن الرفقة. يقاس على التمر ما كان مثله من الفواكه أو كل معدود من المآكل.
The prohibition of pairing two dates when eating with a group, because that indicates greed and breeds resentment; this is why it is permitted with the companions' leave. By analogy with dates, the same applies to similar fruits or any food eaten piece by piece.
