عَنْ جابرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ أمرَ بِلَعْقِ الأَصَابِعِ والصَّحْفَةِ، وقالَ: «إِنَّكُمْ لا تَدرُونَ في أَيِّ طعَامِكمُ البَركَةُ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the licking of the fingers and the dish, and said: "You do not know in which part of your food the blessing lies." Reported by Muslim.

الصحفة: إناء الطعام. لا تدرون: لا تعلمون. في أيّ طعامكم: أي في أي جزء من أجزائه.
"The dish" (sahfah): the food vessel. "You do not know": you are unaware. "In which of your food": that is, in which of its parts.

من حِكم استحباب لعق آثار الطعام مع الأصابع تحصيل بركة الطعام، وعدم ازدراء نعم الله تعالى، والاستفادة من جميع أجزاء الطعام والتقوي به على طاعة الله عز وجل. لعق الأصابع والإناء بعد الفراغ ليست من الدناءة ومخالفة الأدب الكامل، كما يظن ذلك بعض الناس.
Among the wisdoms behind the recommendation to lick the traces of food off the fingers are attaining the blessing of the food, not disdaining Allah's blessings, benefiting from every part of the food, and using it to gain strength for obeying Allah (the Mighty and Majestic). Licking the fingers and the vessel after finishing is not a lowly act contrary to perfect etiquette, as some people imagine.
