Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a morsel of food falls from one of you, let him pick it up, remove any dirt on it, and eat it; and let him not leave it for the devil. And let him not wipe his hand with the napkin until he has licked his fingers, for he does not know in which part of his food the blessing lies." Reported by Muslim.
"Let him remove" (fal-yumit): that is, let him take away and wipe off. "Dirt" (adha): what clings to it of dust and the like. "Let him not leave it for the devil": he should not leave it for the devil, for the devil is present with a person at his food, and if he leaves it, the devil shares in it. This is among the matters of the unseen that we believe in without knowing its exact nature.

It is recommended to pick up food that falls on the ground or elsewhere and eat it after removing any dirt clinging to it — to train the soul in humility, to subdue the devil, and to attain the blessing — so long as this does not result in definite harm. It is permissible to wipe the hand clean of food with a napkin after licking it, and if washing is available, that is better.
