عنْ أبي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: قال رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «طَعَامُ الاثنينِ كافي الثَّلاثَةِ، وَطَعَامُ الثَّلاثَةِ كافي الأَربعَةِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Food enough for two is sufficient for three, and food enough for three is sufficient for four." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

الحثُّ على المكارم، والقناعة بالكفاية، وإيثار الإنسان غيره ولو بجزء من نصيبه. ليس المراد من العدد الحصر وإنّما المراد أنّ المشاركة سبب في حصول البركة، وأنّه لا ينبغي للاثنين أن يمنعا إدخال ثالث لطعامهما وهكذا، ويتأكّد هذا عند حدوث مجاعة أو نقص عام للأطعمة.
Encouragement toward noble virtues, contentment with what suffices, and preferring others over oneself even with a portion of one's own share. The numbers are not meant to be restrictive; rather, the point is that sharing is a cause of blessing, and that two people should not refuse to admit a third to their food, and so on. This becomes all the more emphasized in times of famine or a general shortage of food.
