Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the ikhtinath (bending back the mouths) of waterskins - that is, that their mouths be bent back and drunk from. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

"Waterskins" (asqiyah): plural of siqa', a container in which water, milk, and the like are kept, and which used to be made of leather. "Their mouths be bent back": that is, the opening of the waterskin or water bag is folded and bent back in order to drink, not that it is literally broken, since it is made of leather.

The disapproval of drinking directly from the mouth of a vessel whose interior cannot be seen, for fear that something harmful may be inside it and slip into one's belly and injure him - unless one finds no cup or the like into which to pour the water. The prohibition of drinking from the mouths of waterskins is not to be extended by analogy to drinking directly from a tap (faucet) and the like, since one is safe there from the presence of anything harmful - unless drinking from it would disgust whoever drinks after him, in which case that should be taken into account.
