عَنْ أُمِّ ثابِتٍ كَبْشَةَ بِنْتِ ثَابتٍ أُخْتِ حَسَّانَ بْنِ ثابتٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَعَنْهَا قالتْ: دخَل علَيَّ رسولُ الله صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، فَشَرِبَ مِنْ فِي قِرْبةٍ مُعَلَّقةٍ قَائمًا، فَقُمْتُ إِلى فِيهَا فَقطَعْتُهُ، رواهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ. وقال: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صحيح.
Umm Thabit Kabshah bint Thabit, the sister of Hassan ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him and with her), reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in to me and drank from the mouth of a hanging water bag while standing, so I got up and cut off its mouth. Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

فقطعته: إِنَّمَا قَطَعَتْها لِتَحْفَظَ موْضِعَ فَمِ رسولِ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، وَتَتَبَرَّكَ بِهِ، وَتَصُونَهُ عَنِ الابتِذالِ.
"So I cut it off": she only cut it off in order to preserve the spot touched by the mouth of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), to seek blessing through it, and to guard it from common, careless use.

The permissibility of drinking while standing on occasion, when there is a need for it. In his drinking (peace and blessings be upon him) from the mouth of the vessel there is an indication that the reported prohibition against drinking while standing is to be understood as denoting (mere) disapproval. The permissibility of seeking blessing through the relics of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); this is particular to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and no one else - neither Companions nor scholars - is to be measured against him by analogy.
