Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The time for prayer arrived, so those whose homes were nearby went to their families, while a group remained. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was brought a stone basin, but the basin was too small for him to spread his palm in it, yet all the people performed ablution from it. They asked, "How many were you?" He said, "Eighty and more." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim); this is al-Bukhari's wording. In a narration of his and of Muslim: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a vessel of water, and a shallow bowl containing a little water was brought to him. He placed his fingers in it. Anas said: I began to look at the water gushing forth from between his fingers, and I estimated that those who performed ablution from it were between seventy and eighty.
"The time for prayer arrived": that is, its time began. "To his family": to his house, to perform ablution there. The basin (mikhdab): a vessel of stone in which clothes are washed. "To spread his palm in it": to place his palm in it spread open. "So the people performed ablution": that is, from the water that gushed forth from between his fingers (peace and blessings be upon him) into that basin. A shallow bowl (qadah rahrah): a wide bowl with low sides. "I estimated": that is, I reckoned the number.

It is recommended to occupy oneself with the prayer once its time has begun. The basic ruling regarding vessels is that they are pure, and it is permissible to perform ablution and drink from them unless they contain a visible impurity. A miracle of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in multiplying the water by his blessing; and the miracle of water gushing from between his fingers is more wondrous than its gushing from the rock.
