عَنْ جابرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رسُولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ دَخَلَ على رَجُلٍ مِنَ الأَنْصارِ ومَعهُ صاحبٌ لَهُ، فقالَ رسُولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «إِنْ كَانَ عِنْدَكَ مَاءٌ بَاتَ هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةَ في شَنَّةٍ، وَإِلّا كَرَعْنا» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to a man of the Ansar, accompanied by a companion of his, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you have water that has stayed overnight in a waterskin, then give it; otherwise we will drink directly with our mouths." شَنَّة: القِربة القديمة البالية المصنوعة من جلد، وهو أشد تبريدًا للماء من غيره، وسبب طلبه صلى الله عليه وسلم للماء البائت في الشنّ أن الوقت صيف وهذا أبرد وأصفى من غيره. كَرعْنا: تناولنا الماء بالفم من غير إناء.
A waterskin (shannah): an old, worn skin made of hide, which cools water better than others. The reason he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for water kept overnight in the skin was that it was summer, and this is cooler and purer than other water. "We will drink directly with our mouths": we will take the water with the mouth without a vessel.
