عَنِ البراءِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: كانَ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ مَرْبُوعا، وَلقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ في حُلَّةٍ حمْراءَ ما رأَيْتُ شَيْئًا قَطُّ أَحْسَنَ مِنْهُ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Al-Bara (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was of medium height, and I saw him in a red garment; I never saw anything more beautiful than him. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
مربوعًا: ليس قصيرًا ولا مفرطًا في الطول. حُلَّة: هي عبارة عن إزار ورداء ولا يكون حلّة إلّا من ثوبين. حمراء: أي فيها خطوط حمر لا أنّ لونها أحمر بحت. قَط: أي ما علمت أحسن منها.
Of medium height (marbu'an): neither short nor excessively tall. A garment (hullah): it consists of a lower wrap and an upper cloak, and it is not called a hullah unless it is of two pieces. Red (hamra): that is, it had red stripes in it, not that its color was pure red. "Never" (qatt): that is, I never knew anything more beautiful than it.

جواز لبس الأحمر للرجال وقيل مكروه. أن الملابس الجميلة مطلوبة ومشروعة، وهي مختلفة متنوعة، فإذا لبس ما يسَّر الله له من دون تكبرٍ ولا إسبالٍ، ولا من اكتسابٍ محرمٍ، فذلك مباح له، سواء كان أحمر أو أسود أو أخضر أو أبيض أو غير ذلك.
The permissibility of wearing red for men; it was also said to be disliked. Beautiful garments are desirable and lawful, and they vary in kind. So if a person wears what Allah has made accessible to him, without arrogance, without letting garments trail, and not from unlawful earnings, then that is permissible for him, whether red, black, green, white, or otherwise.
