Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Jurayy Jabir ibn Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw a man whose opinion people deferred to; he did not say anything but they accepted it from him. I said: Who is this? They said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: "Upon you be peace, O Messenger of Allah" — twice. He said: "Do not say 'Upon you be peace,' for 'Upon you be peace' is the greeting of the dead. Say: 'Peace be upon you.'" I said: Are you the Messenger of Allah? He said: "I am the Messenger of Allah, the One whom, if harm befalls you and you call upon Him, He removes it from you; and if a year of drought befalls you and you call upon Him, He causes [the earth] to grow for you; and if you are in a barren land or a desert and your mount is lost and you call upon Him, He returns it to you." I said: Give me counsel. He said: "Do not curse anyone." He said: So I never cursed anyone after that, neither a free man, nor a slave, nor a camel, nor a sheep. "And do not belittle any good deed, and speak to your brother with a cheerful face toward him — for that is part of good conduct. Raise your lower garment to the middle of the shin, and if you refuse, then to the ankles. Beware of letting the lower garment trail, for it is from arrogance, and Allah does not love arrogance. And if a man insults you and reproaches you for what he knows about you, do not reproach him for what you know about him, for its evil consequence will fall upon him." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi with a sahih (authentic) chain, and al-Tirmidhi said: a hasan sahih hadith.

The eagerness of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) to seize upon the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and act upon them. The prohibition of reviling and insulting; and it is not permissible for one who is insulted to retaliate against the one who insulted or reviled him except with the like of what he was reviled with, provided it is not a lie or something forbidden. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained to the Bedouin that the Lord of the worlds, Glorified is He, is the One who removes harm and brings benefit: so if a camel is lost in a desert and you call upon Allah, He returns it to you; and if the land is stricken with barrenness, Allah makes it grow. That "Upon you be peace" is the greeting of the dead according to the custom of the Jahiliyyah; yet that is not what is prescribed in greeting the dead. Rather, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to greet the dead as he greeted the living, saying: "Peace be upon you, abode of a believing people." The preferability of raising the lower garment to the middle of the shins, and that there is no harm in letting it down to the ankles. The prohibition of reproaching others, for it contradicts the character of a Muslim.
