Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The wearing of silk and gold has been forbidden to the males of my nation, and made lawful for its females." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

The Shariah's regard for the psychological need of women to adorn themselves, by permitting gold and silk for them but not for men. Among the legal wisdoms in prohibiting the wearing of gold and silk for men in this world is the cultivation of a habit of ruggedness, work, and earnestness, which are among the traits of manliness. Just as Islam takes care to cultivate a person inwardly, in his heart and mind, so too it takes care of his outward appearance, because of its effect on his behavior and character.
