Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to his bed at night, he would place his hand under his cheek, then say: "O Allah, in Your name I die and I live." And when he woke, he would say: "Praise be to Allah who has given us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection." Reported by al-Bukhari.
"Went to his bed": that is, he intended to sleep in it. "O Allah, in Your name I die and I live": that is, I sleep and I awaken. "Given us life": that is, awakened us; this is the lesser life, from the breathing in of the soul until the reaching of one's appointed term. "Caused us to die": what is meant is sleep, which is the lesser death. "The resurrection": the bringing to life for the raising up on the Day of Resurrection.
The recommendation of placing the hand under the right cheek when sleeping, and supplicating with what has been reported, in emulation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sleep is called death because with it the intellect and movement cease. Sleep and death share the severing of the soul's attachment to the body.
