Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the courtyard of the Ka'bah sitting with his hands clasped around his knees like this. And he demonstrated the clasped posture (ihtiba') with his hands, which is the qurfusa' (squatting posture). Reported by al-Bukhari.
"In the courtyard of the Ka'bah": the courtyard (fina') is the area extending along the side of the Ka'bah, that is, its open space. "Clasping his knees (muhtabiyan)": he sits on his buttocks and draws his thighs and shins toward his belly with his forearms, or with a garment, so as to support himself. "The qurfusa'": that he sits on his buttocks, presses his thighs against his belly, spreads his knees apart, and clasps them with his hands, placing them upon his shins.
