عَنْ قَيْلَةَ بِنْتِ مَخْرمَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْها قالتْ: رأيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ وهوَ قَاعِدٌ القُرْفُصَاءَ، فلمَّا رأيتُ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ المُتَخَشِّعَ في الجلسة أُرْعِدتُ مِنَ الفَرَقِ. رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ والتِّرْمِذِيُّ.
Qaylah bint Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sitting in the qurfusa' (squatting) posture, and when I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his humble, submissive sitting, I trembled with awe. Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi.

المُتَخَشِّعَ: الخاشع الخاضع المتواضع، وتخشَّع لله: تذلَّل وتضرّع له. أرعدت من الفرق: اضطربت من الخوف.
"Humbly submissive (al-mutakhashshi')": the one who is humble, submissive, and modest; to be humble before Allah (takhashsha'a lillah) is to abase oneself and beseech Him. "I trembled with awe": I shook out of fear.

An account of the humility (khushu') that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) displayed in his sitting. The permissibility of sitting in the qurfusa' posture in the mosque, while taking care not to expose the private parts. The woman's awe, when she saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sitting in the manner of one humble before Allah (Glorified is He) in the utmost humility and tranquility (upon him be peace and blessings): his very bearing (peace and blessings be upon him) caused the woman to grow humble before Allah (Glorified is He), and to fear, revere, and hold the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in awe.
