عنِ ابنِ عمرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُما قالَ: قالَ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «لايُقِيمَنَّ أحَدُكُمْ رَجُلًا مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ ثُمَّ يَجْلِسُ فِيهِ، ولكِنْ تَوسَّعُوا وتَفَسَّحُوا» وَكَانَ ابنُ عُمَرَ إذا قامَ لهُ رَجُلٌ مِنْ مجْلِسهِ لَمْ يَجْلِسْ فِيهِ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "None of you should make a man get up from his seat and then sit in it himself; rather, make room and spread out." And when a man would get up from his seat for Ibn Umar, he would not sit in it. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

The prohibition of diminishing the right of a Muslim, which breeds rancor. The encouragement of humility, which leads to mutual affection. The jurists made an exception for a place [designated] for giving legal verdicts or teaching, in which it is not permitted for anyone but the teacher to sit. The recommendation of making room for the newcomer.
