عَنْ جابرِ بنِ سَمُرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قالَ: «كُنَّا إذَا أَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ جَلَسَ أَحَدُنَا حَيْثُ يَنْتَهي». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ، والتِّرْمِذِيُّ وقالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Jabir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: "When we came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), each of us would sit wherever [the gathering] ended." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

حيث ينتهي: أي المكان الأخير من المجلس حيث ينتهي بآخر إنسان.
"Wherever it ends": that is, the last place in the gathering, where it ends with the last person.

من أدب الجلوس في المجالس أن يجلس الإنسان حيث ينتهي به المجلس إلا إذا وجد فرجة. على القادم أن يجلس حيث يجد فراغًا إلا ما خصص لأحد أو شغر المكان لعذر طرأ على صاحبه. لا يطلب قيام أحد من مجلسه ليجلس مكانه. تأدب الصحابة رضي الله عنهم مع النّبيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم.
It is from the etiquette of sitting in gatherings that a person sits wherever the gathering ends for him, unless he finds a gap. The one who arrives should sit wherever he finds a space, except for a place designated for someone or a place left vacant because of some reason that befell its occupant. He should not ask anyone to get up from his seat so that he may sit in his place. The good manners of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) toward the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
