عَنْ أبي قتادةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: قالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «الرُّؤْيا الصَّالِحَةُ، -وفي روايةٍ: الرُّؤيَا الحَسَنَةُ- منَ اللهِ، والحُلْمُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ، فَمَنْ رَأى شَيْئًا يَكرَهُهُ فَلْيَنْفُثْ عَنْ شِمَالهِ ثَلاَثًا، ولْيَتَعَوَّذْ مِنَ الشَّيْطانِ فَإنَّها لا تَضُرُّهُ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The righteous dream"—and in another narration: "the good dream"—"is from Allah, and the bad dream (hulm) is from Satan. So whoever sees something he dislikes, let him blow lightly to his left three times and seek refuge from Satan, for then it will not harm him." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
الحُلْم: الرؤيا في المنام، فالحُلْم والرؤيا في الأصل بمعنى واحد، لكن غلب في اصطلاح الشرع تخصيص الرؤيا بما يراه من الخير، والحلم بما يراه من الشر. فلينفث: النَّفْثُ هو نَفْخٌ لطيفٌ لا رِيقَ مَعَهُ.
"Al-hulm": a dream seen in sleep. Hulm and ru'ya are originally one and the same, but in the terminology of the Sharia ru'ya has come to be reserved for what one sees of good, and hulm for what one sees of evil. "Let him blow lightly (yanfuth)": nafth is a gentle blowing unaccompanied by saliva.

استحباب النّفث عن اليسار والتعوذ من الشيطان لمن رأى رؤيا شر، وذلك طردًا للشيطان واحتقارًا له وعدم التفات إلى ما يخيله له، فليس بضار أحدًا فيما يوسوسه إلّا بإذن الله. حرص الشيطان على مساءة ابن آدم، فيريه ما يكره، وما يزعجه، ويخوفه، ويقلقه.
It is recommended for one who sees an evil dream to blow lightly to his left and to seek refuge from Satan, as a means of driving Satan away, showing contempt for him, and paying no heed to what he conjures up; for he can harm no one through his whisperings except by Allah's permission. Satan's eagerness to distress the son of Adam, showing him what he hates and what disturbs, frightens, and troubles him.
