عَنْ أبي الأسْقَعِ وَاثِلَةَ بْنِ الأسْقَعِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: قالَ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «إنَّ مِنْ أعظَمِ الْفِرَى أنْ يَدَّعِيَ الرَّجُلُ إلى غَيْرِ أبِيهِ، أوْ يُريَ عَيْنَهُ مَا لمْ تَرَ، أوْ يقولَ على رسولِ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ مَا لَمْ يَقُلْ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Abu al-Asqa' Wathilah ibn al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the greatest of fabrications is that a man claims descent from other than his father, or that he claims his eye saw what it did not see, or that he attributes to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) what he did not say." الفِرى: جمع فِرية، وهي أشد الكذب. يدّعي: ينتسب إلى غير أبيه. يُرِي عينه: يكذب ويدَّعي أن عينيه رأتا في المنام شيئًا وما رأتاه.
"Al-fira": the plural of firyah, which is the most grievous form of lying. "Claims (yadda'i)": traces his lineage to other than his father. "Makes his eye see": he lies and claims that his eyes saw something in a dream when they did not.

أن الكذب في الرؤيا كبيرة، لأنّه كذب على الله في أنّه أراه كذا وهو لم ير ما يقول. أنّ الانتساب إلى غير الأب كبيرة لأنّ فيها تضييعًا للأنساب وإدخالًا على الأسر ما ليس منها، وهذا يترتب عليه محاذير شرعية كثيرة. التحذير من تصديق بعض أصحاب الأهواء الذين يحدثون بأمور مخالفة لنصوص الكتاب والسنة بدعاوى باطلة من الرؤيا. أنّ الكذب على رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلّم كبيرة أيضًا، لما يترتب على ذلك من تضليل الناس عن الدين. أنّ ذكر الرجل في الحديث هو باعتبار الغالب وإلّا فالمرأة كذلك.
Lying about a dream is a major sin, because it is a lie against Allah, claiming that He showed him such-and-such when he did not see what he says. Attributing oneself to other than one's father is a major sin, because it entails the loss of lineages and introducing into families those who do not belong to them; and this leads to many prohibited consequences in the Sharia. A warning against believing certain people of misguided desires who relate matters contradicting the texts of the Book and the Sunnah on the basis of false claims of dreams. Lying about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is likewise a major sin, because of the misguidance of people away from the religion that results from it. The mention of "a man" in the hadith is on the basis of what is most common; otherwise, a woman is likewise included.
