استحباب السلام على من تعرف وعلى من لا تعرف. أنّ ردّ السلام واجب على الفرد إذا كان لوحده، وإن كانوا جماعة فإنّ ردّ عنهم واحد كفاهم. فضل إلقاء السلام، وخصّه بالذكر مع الإطعام لأنّه وسيلة المحبة بين المسلمين. لا يقوم مقام السلام غيره في الأجر والثواب من صيغ التحية كصباح الخير أو مرحبًا أو غير ذلك، ولكن يجوز قول ذلك بعد السلام. أنّ السلام حقّ للمسلمين، وليس السلام للمعرفة، وقد صح عن النّبيّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم في أشراط الساعة الصغرى أنّه ذكر هذا من علاماتها، أن يكون السلام للمعرفة.

It is recommended to give the greeting of peace to those you know and those you do not know. Returning the greeting is obligatory upon an individual when he is alone; and if they are a group, it suffices them for one of them to return it on their behalf. The merit of offering the greeting of peace; it was mentioned specifically alongside feeding others because it is a means of love among Muslims. No other greeting takes the place of the salam in reward, such as "good morning," "welcome," and the like, though it is permissible to say such things after the salam. The salam is a right of the Muslims and is not restricted to acquaintances; it has been authentically reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), among the minor signs of the Hour, that he mentioned this as one of its signs: that the salam would be given only to those one knows.
