عَنْ أبي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، عنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ قالَ: «لمَّا خَلَقَ اللهُ تَعَالَى آدمَ قالَ: اذْهَبْ فَسَلِّمْ عَلَى أُولئِكَ -نَفَرٍ مِنَ الَمَلاَئكةِ جُلُوسٍ- فاسْتمِعْ ما يُحَيُّونَكَ، فَإنَّها تَحيَّتُكَ وَتَحِيَّةُ ذُرِّيَّتِك، فقالَ: السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فقالُوا: السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ وَرَحْمةُ اللهِ، فَزادُوهُ: وَرَحْمةُ اللهِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ .
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah the Exalted created Adam, He said: Go and greet those—a group of angels seated—and listen to how they greet you, for it is your greeting and the greeting of your descendants. So he said: Peace be upon you (al-salamu alaykum). They said: Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah (al-salamu alayka wa rahmatullah)—they added for him: and the mercy of Allah." أنّ السلام عليكم هي التحية التي شرّعها الله تعالى لعباده منذ خلق آدم. في الحديث مشروعية الزيادة في الرد على الابتداء. اتّفق العلماء على وجوب ردّ السلام. أنّ الإنسان إذا سلم على الواحد يقول: السلام عليك وقال بعض العلماء: يقول السلام عليكم يريد بذلك أن يسلم على الإنسان الذي سلم عليه ومن معه من الملائكة، وإن كانوا جماعة يسلّم عليهم بلفظ السلام عليكم.
"Al-salamu alaykum" is the greeting that Allah the Exalted legislated for His servants ever since He created Adam. The hadith shows the legitimacy of adding more in the reply than in the initial greeting. The scholars are agreed upon the obligation of returning the salam. When a person greets a single individual, he says "peace be upon you" (al-salamu alayka); some scholars said he says "al-salamu alaykum," intending thereby to greet the person he is greeting together with the angels accompanying him; and if they are a group, he greets them with the wording "al-salamu alaykum."
