Riyad Al Salihin

Al-Tufayl ibn Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he used to come to Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and go out with him in the morning to the market. He said: When we went out to the market, Abdullah ibn Umar would not pass by any peddler, or trader, or poor person, or anyone else without greeting him with the salam. Al-Tufayl said: One day I came to Abdullah ibn Umar and he asked me to follow him to the market. I said to him: What will you do in the market when you do not stop to buy, nor ask about goods, nor bargain over them, nor sit in the market's gatherings? And I said: Sit with us here and let us talk. He said: O Abu Batn—al-Tufayl had a large belly—we go out only for the sake of the salam: we greet whomever we meet. Reported by Malik in al-Muwatta with a sahih chain.

It is recommended to give the salam to everyone one meets, however frequent that may be. Abdullah ibn Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) keenness to emulate the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and do what he commanded: he would go out to the market to greet the poor, the needy, and the sellers, then return having earned from the market abundant good deeds. The permissibility of frequenting gatherings, even without need, in order to give the salam. The permissibility of joking with a companion by referring to some trait he has, provided one does not intend to belittle him and knows that he does not mind.
