عنْ عِمرانَ بنِ الْحُصَيْنِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُما قالَ: جاءَ رجُلٌ إلى النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ فقالَ: السَّلامُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ، فقالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «عَشْرٌ»، ثُمَّ جَاءَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ: السَّلامُ عَلَيكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ، فَرَدَّ عليْهِ فَجَلَسَ، فقال: «عِشْرونَ»، ثُمَّ جَاءَ آخَرُ فَقَالَ: السَّلامُ عَلَيكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، فَرَدَّ عليْهِ فَجَلَسَ، فقال: «ثَلاَثُونَ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ والتِّرْمِذِيُّ وقالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Imran ibn al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Peace be upon you (al-salamu alaykum). He returned the greeting to him, then the man sat down, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ten." Then another came and said: Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah (al-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah). He returned the greeting to him, and the man sat down, and he said: "Twenty." Then another came and said: Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings (al-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh). He returned the greeting to him, and the man sat down, and he said: "Thirty." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

أنَّ السلام إذا كان بجملةٍ فهو بعشر حسنات، لأن الحسنة بعشر أمثالها، وإذا كان بجملتين فعشرون، وإن كان بثلاثٍ فثلاثون. للمسلم أن يقتصر في إلقاء السلام على قول: (السلام عليكم) وإن زاد: (ورحمة الله) فهو أفضل، وإن زاد على ذلك: (وبركاته) فهو أفضل وأكثر خيرًا. أقل الرد (عليكم السلام)، لا مجرد قوله: (عليكم) أو (وعليكم) من غير ذكر السلام ، إلا إذا سلم الكافر بلفظ غير صريح وواضح فإنه يقال له (وعليكم). الجواز في الزيادة على البركة إذا انتهى إليها المبتدئ، كقول: وعليكم السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته ومغفرته، لأنّه كلّما زاد المسلم من الخير زيد له في الأجر.
When the salam consists of one phrase, it earns ten good deeds, for a good deed is rewarded tenfold; when it is two phrases, twenty; and when it is three, thirty. A Muslim may limit his greeting to saying "al-salamu alaykum"; if he adds "wa rahmatullah," it is better; and if he adds further "wa barakatuh," it is better still and greater in reward. The minimum reply is "alaykum al-salam," not merely saying "alaykum" or "wa alaykum" without mentioning "al-salam"—unless a disbeliever gives a greeting that is not explicit and clear, in which case one says to him: "and upon you (wa alaykum)." The permissibility of adding more beyond "barakatuh" when the one who initiated has ended with it, such as saying: "wa alaykum al-salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh wa maghfiratuh," because the more good a Muslim adds, the more reward he is granted.
