Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "This is Gabriel, who gives you the greeting of peace." She said: I said: And upon him be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings (wa alayhi al-salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh). Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). Thus it occurs in some narrations of the two Sahihs with "wa barakatuh," and in some without it; and the addition of a trustworthy narrator is accepted.

The legitimacy of sending greetings of peace; the one who conveys it should deliver it if able, since it is a trust. A demonstration of the merit of the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). It shows that a person should return the salam to one whose greeting reached him even if he was not present, because the salam is a supplication for safety and good.
