عَنْ أبي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ أن رسول اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «لا تَبْدَؤُوا اليَهُودَ ولا النَّصَارى بالسَّلامِ، فإذَا لَقِيتُمْ أحَدَهُمْ في طَرِيقٍ فَاضْطَرُّوهُ إلى أضْيَقِهِ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not initiate the greeting with the Jews or the Christians; and when you meet one of them on a road, force him to its narrowest part." Reported by Muslim.

فاضطروه إلى أضيقه: فألجئوه بالتضييق عليه أن يسير على حافة الطريق وهذا عند الزحام.
"Force him to its narrowest part": that is, compel him, by constraining him, to walk along the edge of the road — and this is at times of crowding.

تحريم ابتداء السلام على الكافر، ولا يجوز أن نبدأهم بالتحيّة ولو بغير السلام لأنّ في ذلك تعظيمهم، ونحن منهيون عن تعظيمهم إلّا إذا دعت حاجة أو ضرورة أو وجدت مصلحة فيجوز حينئذ أن نبدأهم بالتحية لكن بغير السلام. عَنْد الزحام في الطريق يمشي المسلمون في صدر الطريق وغيرهم على حافته إظهارًا لعزة المسلمين.
The prohibition of initiating the greeting with a disbeliever. It is not permissible to initiate them even with a salutation other than the salam, because in that is honoring them, and we are forbidden from honoring them — except when there is a need, necessity, or benefit, in which case it is then permissible to initiate them with a salutation, but other than the salam. At times of crowding on the road, the Muslims walk in the middle of the road and others along its edge, as a manifestation of the honor of the Muslims.
