عَنْ أُسامةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ مَرَّ عَلَى مَجْلسٍ فيهِ أخْلاطٌ منَ المُسلِمِينَ وَالْمُشْرِكينَ -عَبَدةِ الأوثَانِ واليَهُودِ- فَسَّلمَ عَلَيْهِمُ النَّبِيُّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ .
From Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a gathering in which there was a mixture of Muslims and polytheists — idol-worshippers and Jews — and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted them. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

أخلاط: جماعة من الناس فيهم المسلم وغيره من المشركين.
"A mixture (akhlat)": a company of people among whom are the Muslim and others of the polytheists.

استحباب السلام على من في المجلس ولو كان فيهم غير المسلمين. جواز جلوس المسلم مع أهل الشرك بشرط أن لا يكون في المجلس محرّم، أو تأثير على دينه وخلقه، كما يجوز من باب دعوتهم إلى الإسلام. المستحب أن يكون السلام على الأخلاط بصيغة: السلام على من اتّبع الهدى.
The recommendation of greeting those in a gathering even if there are non-Muslims among them. The permissibility of a Muslim sitting with the people of polytheism, on the condition that there be nothing forbidden in the gathering, nor any effect upon his religion and character; likewise it is permissible for the purpose of calling them to Islam. It is recommended that the greeting to a mixed gathering be with the wording: "Peace be upon whoever follows the guidance."
