عَنْ أبي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: قالَ رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «إذَا انْتَهَى أحَدُكُمْ إلى المَجْلسِ فَلْيُسَلِّمْ، فَإذَا أرَادَ أنْ يَقُومَ فَلْيُسَلِّمْ، فَلَيْسَتِ الأُولى بأَحَقَّ مِنَ الآخِرَةِ» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ، والتِّرْمِذِيُّ وقالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you reaches a gathering, let him give the greeting; and when he wishes to rise, let him give the greeting, for the first is not more deserving than the last." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

انتهى: وصل. الأولى: التسليمة عند الوصول. الآخرة: التسليمة عند المغادرة.
"Reaches": arrives. "The first": the greeting given upon arrival. "The last": the greeting given upon departure.

أنّ السنّة في السلام تكون عند المجيء إلى المجلس قبل أن يبتدئهم في الحديث، وتكون عند المفارقة، إذا دخل الإنسان المجلس قال: السلام عليكم، وإذا أراد أن يقوم قال: السلام عليكم، وهكذا إذا دخل على إنسان في مكتبه، أو في بيته.
That the sunnah in the greeting is to give it upon coming to a gathering, before beginning to speak with them, and to give it upon departure. When a person enters a gathering he says: "Peace be upon you," and when he wishes to rise he says: "Peace be upon you"; and likewise when he enters upon someone in his office or in his house.
