عَنْ أبي مُوسَى الأشعريّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: قالَ رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «الاستِئْذانُ ثَلاَثٌ، فَإِنْ أُذِنَ لَكَ، وَإلَّا فَارْجِعْ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
From Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seeking permission to enter is three times; if permission is granted to you, [enter], and if not, then go back." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

الاستئذان: طلب الإذن بالدخول. ثلاث: أي يكرر ثلاث مرات.
"Seeking permission (al-isti'dhan)": requesting permission to enter. "Three times": that is, it is repeated three times.

أنّ الأدب والسنّة في الاستئذان أن يكرره ثلاثًا فإن أُذن له بعدها أو قَبْلها دخل، وإن لم يؤذن له فليس له أن يدخل، ولا يزيد على ذلك.
That the proper etiquette and sunnah in seeking permission is to repeat it three times; if permission is granted to him after them — or before them — he enters, and if permission is not granted to him he may not enter, and he does not add more than that.
