From Rib'i ibn Hirash, who said: A man from Banu Amir narrated to us that he sought permission to enter upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was in a house, and said: "May I enter?" So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his servant: "Go out to this man and teach him how to seek permission; say to him: Say: 'Peace be upon you, may I enter?'" The man heard him and said: "Peace be upon you, may I enter?" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him permission, and he entered. Reported by Abu Dawud with a sahih (authentic) chain.
"May I enter? (a-alij)": may I come in? — from al-wuluj, which means entering. "So teach him how to seek permission": that is, the wording of seeking permission.
