عنْ كِلْدَةَ بْنِ الْحَنْبَلِ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: أتيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ، فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ ولمْ أُسَلِّمْ، فقالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «ارْجـِعْ فَقُلِ: السَّلامُ عَلَيكُمْ، أَأَدْخلُ؟» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ، والتِّرْمِذِيُّ وقالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
From Kildah ibn al-Hanbal (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and entered upon him without giving the greeting. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go back and say: 'Peace be upon you, may I enter?'" Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

وجوب الاستئذان، والسلام عند الدخول. الأمر بالمعروف، وتعليم السنن والآداب والحثّ على تطبيقها وعدم التساهل فيها. استخدام الرسول صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ الطريقة العمليّة والتطبيقيّة في التعليم، فلم ينهر الرجل ولم يزجره وهذا دليل على سعة حلمه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ.
The obligation of seeking permission and greeting upon entering. Enjoining good, teaching the sunnahs and etiquettes, encouraging their application, and not being lax regarding them. The Messenger's (peace and blessings be upon him) use of the practical, applied method in teaching: he did not rebuke or scold the man, and this is evidence of the vastness of his forbearance (peace and blessings be upon him).
