عَنْ أبي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: كانَ رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ إذَا عَطَسَ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ أوْ ثَوبَهُ عَلى فيهِ، وَخَفَضَ -أوْ غَضَّ- بِهَا صَوْتَهُ. شَكَّ الرَّاوِي. رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ، والتِّرْمِذِيُّ وقالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صحيحٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sneezed, he would place his hand or his garment over his mouth, and lower, or muffle, his voice with it. The narrator was uncertain [which word was used]. Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

خفض أو غضّ بها صوته: أي لم يجهر به.
"Lowered or muffled his voice with it": that is, he did not raise it aloud.

أنّ من الأدب في المجالس أن يضع من جاءه العطاس يده أو شيئًا على فمه وأنفه حَتَّى لا يتأثر جليسه بشيء من البصاق أو نحوه. خفض الصوت بالعطاس مطلوب وهو من كمال الأدب ومكارم الأخلاق.
Among the manners of gatherings is that one who is about to sneeze places his hand or something over his mouth and nose, so that his companion is not affected by any spittle or the like. Lowering the voice when sneezing is called for and is part of perfect manners and noble character.
