Safwan ibn Assal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A Jew said to his companion: "Take us to this Prophet." So they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about nine clear signs. [The narrator] then related the hadith up to his words: So they kissed his hand and his foot and said: "We bear witness that you are a prophet." Reported by al-Tirmidhi and others with sahih (authentic) chains.
"Take us to this Prophet": that is, so that we may verify some of his miracles that point to his prophethood. "Nine clear signs": these are what appear in the hadith itself in the version of al-Tirmidhi: that you associate nothing with Allah, that you not steal, nor commit fornication, nor kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except by right, nor bring an innocent person before a ruler to have him killed, nor practice sorcery, nor consume usury, nor slander a chaste woman, nor turn in flight on the day of battle; and specifically for you, O Jews, that you not transgress regarding the Sabbath. "He then related the hadith": that is, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) answered the nine [signs] they asked about, which are shared between Muslims and Jews, and added for them a tenth specific to them, which they had kept hidden within themselves; he answered them concerning it as a further indication of the miracle. "So they kissed his hand": that is, the Jews and those present along with the questioners.

Kissing the hand of those thought to be people of knowledge, piety, and righteousness, without excess, since this was done with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he did not reject it. As for kissing the foot, that was only for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and for one's parents after him; for with anyone other than parents it opens a door of evil and temptation for the one to whom it is done.
