Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while he was leaning against me, saying: "O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, and join me with the Highest Companion." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

It is recommended to empty the heart of attachment to this world when the signs of death descend, and to attach it to the side of the Truth, hoping for mercy and forgiveness. This from him (peace and blessings be upon him) was a request for increased good deeds and elevated ranks and a teaching for his community; it does not mean that sins occurred from him, for he is infallible. It is recommended to supplicate for forgiveness and mercy upon ascertaining the descent of death, out of longing to meet Allah, in emulation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
